There are several well-loved brand stores in Fowey such as Seasalt, Joules, Fat Face, and Mountain Warehouse. But the real charm of the town lies in the wide range of boutique, unique and independent shops. You can spend hours browsing for clothes, homewares, crafts, glassware, art, antiques, books, seaside knick-knacks, traditional children’s toys and don't forget the old-fashioned sweet shop!
There are also top-quality bakeries where you can find bread, rolls, pasties, cakes and treats. There may be no large supermarket, but with two local convenience stores and a Boots, you'll still find everything you need. There is a Co-op around 5 miles away, Asda and Tesco are around 7 miles, and all the major supermarkets will deliver online shopping as well.
THINGS TO SEE & DO
Fowey is an estuary river town, so the obvious thing to do is spend a day messing about on the water! There are many kayak, canoe, and boat hire centres that go from both Quays. If you don’t have the strongest sea legs, then why not just take the passenger ferry over to Polruan for an afternoon! If you fancy going a little further, you can take the ferry round to Mevagissey too.
In the centre of Fowey there is a sweet little aquarium, and a local museum – both are worth a peek! Fowey has a 14th century church in the centre of the town and a 15th century fort, St. Catherine’s Castle, on the edge of the estuary.
The closest beach to town is Readymoney Cove, which has clean sands and is perfect for swimming. A swimming platform is moored off the beach during the summer months. There is also a fabulous little shop for all your seaside needs. However, no dogs are allowed between Easter and October.
There is a secret sea-pool hidden away at Whitehouse Pier which is perfect for a refreshing paddle while looking out over the estuary. It can only be found at certain times, so check those tide times!
Within a 5/10-minute drive, you can be at Polridmouth, Polkerris or Par Sands, and within a half hour drive you’ll find Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Porthpean, Pentewan or Mevagissey.
An hour’s drive and you are on the north coast of Cornwall – this is where you will find the more dramatic views, coastline and good surfing on some of the beaches.
Bit of a thrill seeker? Then Cornwall has some fantastic opportunities to get your adrenaline buzz! Hang Loose at Eden have zip wires and giant air swings, Adrenaline Quarry near Liskeard is perfect for a day full of crazy activities, and Retallack Watersports near Newquay is the place to head for total-wipeout style aqua adventures.
There are hundreds of miles of fantastic walks in Cornwall. The South West Coastal Path alone winds 630 miles around the county, and The Saints Way is 27 miles from Fowey on the south coast, right across to Padstow on the north coast. The Fowey Hall Walk is much more manageable at 4 miles and is the best way to see Fowey from all angles! We also particularly enjoy the Gribbin Head walk, especially when the Daymark is open in the summer. Whether you enjoy the sea, woods, rivers, moors or fields, you will not be disappointed with the walks in Cornwall.
The closest major attractions are The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. They really do offer something for everyone and make an enjoyable day-trip. For green-fingered travellers, there are also many other great gardens; in fact, there are officially 12 Great Gardens of Cornwall!
Cornwall is very famous for its tin mining heritage, and you will see many old engine houses dotted across the landscape. The countryside directly surrounding Fowey and St Austell is locally known as Clay Country due to its abundance of China Clay. Wheal Martyn is an interesting museum that gives a good insight into the history and culture of the clay works, and if you take the walk to the top of the grounds it overlooks a modern working pit.
There are lots of National Trust and English Heritage sites across Cornwall, as well as stately homes and gardens. Some of our local favourites are Lanhydrock House, Pencarrow House, Restormel Castle and Caerhays Estate.
Thinking of bringing your 4-legged friend to Fowey? They will love it! Par Sands Beach and Polridmouth Cove are only a few minutes away and are dog-friendly all year round; Readymoney Cove in town allows them to play from October to Easter. Many of the pubs are pup-friendly, and Lazy Jacks even sell doggy ice cream! Sams on the Beach at Polkerris have a Waggy Wednesday during the winter, when you can take your dog for dinner followed by a walk on the beach – special pet friendly treats are on offer too.
If you’re looking for somewhere just for the kids, check out Camel Creek, Springfields, Dairyland, Kidzworld, Indoor Active, Newquay Zoo or Porfell Wildlife Centre. This is just small selection of the many dozens of places for families to visit! Pop into our office during your stay to pick up our “best days out” pack, full of leaflets and vouchers.
Don’t forget to follow Fowey Homes Holidays on social media for inspiration on days out. When booking your trip with us, please feel free to ask for some personal recommendations - we’d love to help you discover the real hidden gems of Cornwall and get the most of out of your time in beautiful Fowey.

"Fantastic large townhouse in a really brilliant location, right in the heart of Fowey. Couldn’t be better for catching the local ferry, setting off to do the hall walk or for Polkerris. Plenty of space for a group of 7 and a really well equipped property. Would recommend bringing some ear plugs for any light sleepers as the town can be a little loud first thing. Would happily stay again"

Excellent location in the heart of Fowey, clean and well appointed accommodation. We had 2 families of 3, and had plenty of space. Worth knowing for anyone staying in Fowey having come annually for decades, regardless of where you are the seagulls make a lot of noise all night, bring earplugs. Would certainly return, thank you for a great stay!"

"Great location! This was our second time staying in this cottage. It’s central location makes it feel easy to soak up all the atmosphere of Fowey. It’s a very clean, airy and comfortable house and we have had some great memories staying here. Communication was great between the host whenever we needed anything. Thank you!"

"We had a lovely weeks stay at Quayside. The house was perfect for us, very clean, as advertised, and had everything you could need. The property is in a very central location in Fowey and is a few steps away from great local amenities/pubs/restaurants. The only downside to the location of the property was the church bells ringing throughout the night but that certainly wouldn’t put us off coming again. We had a fantastic stay and would definitely visit again!"

“Lovely, bright and airy 4 story town house, including the entrance hall, right in the centre of Fowey quay. Fantastic location for all the amenities and the amazing walks of the coastline! Right in the centre of the town. Didn’t have to walk far for anything! Loved the view from the harbour which was literally about 20/30 steps from our front door. Easy access into the accommodation with a key left in a secure box at the front of the property, quick response from Fowey homes to any issues you may have! Highly recommend staying here for a fantastic staycation. So much walking to be done and you could eat out every night if you wanted or just chill in the lounge watching Netflix!”

“Wonderful week in Fowey and Quayside was perfect for us - well equipped and located right in the centre. Literally 2 mins walk from harbour ferries, pubs, restaurants and shops. We parked at Main Car Park with a long stay ticket. There is a very steep hill climb which might be a pain if you intend to use your car daily. There is a town bus which runs between about 10am and 5pm - starts a bit later on Sundays, which is regular and reliable for a small charge per person. If I was staying in Fowey again, I would probably choose the Caffe Mill car park which is a little further away from Quayside - still only a short walk but more level. There is a loading bay just at the end of the road which was useful on check out. Early morning noise on bin collection days could be an issue if, unlike me, you are not an early riser. It certainly wouldn't put me off booking Quayside - this was far out weighed by the advantages of this beautiful accommodation. The house had plenty of room for the 3 of us, we had a day when the weather kept us in but we didn't feel cooped up. Well equipped kitchen and cosy sitting area. Everywhere was scrupulously clean with plenty of towels. Really good bluetooth speaker and large TV lots of books around if you are kept in for a day. Check in and check out were very easy and any questions I had were answered promptly and fully. Fowey itself is one of the prettiest villages I've stayed in. Nice easy walks and a little cove not too far away. If eating out, I'd recommend booking in advance due to the Covid rules. We ate in The Ship and The Lugger, both really good and friendly staff. Also tried North Street bar which was quirky and very nice food. Easy drives over to Padstow and Mevagissy both of which are worth a trip. Overall, we had a fabulous week away and would definitely recommend Quayside.”

"An amazing stay in Fowey. What a great apartment. It had everything you'd expect and a few things we didn't. Netflix, some basic groceries and even some local fudge. A really nice touch. Rooms were great, very clean and comfortable. Kitchen was kitted out to a very high standard. One of the most positive aspects of the house is the location - seconds from the quay. We stayed during Regatta week so were expecting some noise and late nights - it was very noisy. Ear plugs did the trick but perhaps not for light sleepers. Overall it was a wonderful stay and we wouldn't hesitate to book again."

"Week with family in lovely Fowey
The house is just off the quay, surrounded by pubs, bakeries, shops and cafés. A brilliant central location. It's nicely decorated, clean and has a fairly well equipped kitchen if you would like to eat in, though a little snug when all of our party (six adults, one child and a baby) we're all in. Things to note: Fowey is a located on very steep hills, sloping down to the river. The roads are extremely narrow and parking in town is very limited. We used the car park on the outskirts of town to store our car, which was cheap enough to not to be a problem. It does mean that unloading luggage needs to be thought through. The noise of bottles being emptied by nearby pubs, the crowds of holiday makers and the noisy seagulls can drift up in to the house. Not really a problem for us, baby included, but may be an issue if you're a light sleeper. Overall, I'd recommend staying here as a good base to explore Fowey and the surrounding area."

"A fabulous place to stay, great location right within Fowey. Pubs and restaurants are few minutes walk from the apartment. The host provides efficient check ins and check out which makes it very convenient. The apartment itself is nice and cosy and provides the nessicities e.g towels, bedding, wifi and 2 bathrooms. Bring your own toiletries such as shampoo and shower gel i been to air bnb places that do provide them this one doesn't. I normally bring them but for those who are travelling light. Be aware if you're travelling in large groups (7+ people) with a large vehicle. The roads are tight and parking can be a challenge if you're not used to the roads. Other then that we all had a great time and i would recommend."
